paying homage
to THE LEGEND OF
DUKE KAHANAMOKU
We wanted to pay homage to a legend in Hawaiian history while creating an identity system that was classical and iconic in the surfing world. There was a tremendous amount of pressure to make sure it represented icon that is Duke Kahanamoku.
We crafted two distinctive marks to complement each other for the event. One of these, a crest, pays homage to the historical Hawaiian crest traditionally associated with the Hawaiian Monarchy, reminiscent of its use in past surf competitions.
The Duke Kahanamoku Ocean Festival, an annual event held in late August along the iconic shores of Waikiki Beach, where Duke honed his athletic prowess, stands as a tribute to his remarkable life and enduring legacy. Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, revered as the pioneer 'Waterman', an Olympic Champion, and the embodiment of Aloha, is celebrated throughout the festival.
This weeklong event showcases Duke's diverse talents in surfing, swimming, outrigger canoeing, paddleboard racing, surfboard water polo, and beach volleyball. Moreover, it embraces the evolution of his influence, which now extends to activities such as foiling and dog surfing, drawing participants and enthusiasts from local communities, as well as international and mainland competitors.
Merchandise & Awards
We curated a collection of shirts and merchandise tailored specifically for the week-long events. Proceeds from these sales are dedicated to providing vital resources aimed at enhancing the lives of Hawaii's Scholar Athletes.
